As stated by Hermann Deininger, creative director of the Adidas global brand, “Both Yohji Yamamoto’s design aesthetic and Adidas’ expertise in technology have made this collaboration that much more successful.”
Yohji Yamamoto is a Japanese fashion designer that is known around the world. His fashion is regarded as avant-garde in feeling almost anti-trends with his signature themes of oversized forms and draping textured material. Yamamoto made his debut in Paris during the early ‘80s. Initially Yamamoto had success with is women and men’s lines under the label Yohji Yamamoto. Is secondary slightly more mainstream label, Y’s, was generally clothing and accessories that were generally more accessible to consumers. In 2002 Yamamoto presented his first high-end haute couture collection in Paris. Other lines include. Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme, Yohji Yamamoto Costume D’Homme and Coming Soon by Yohji Yamamoto.
Over the years Yamamoto has collaborated with over companies as well as designers. On such co-operation is the brand Y-3 with Adidas. Adidas is an emblem of the hip-hop scene since the time of Run DMC and their Stan Smiths, but Y-3 decides to change direction. The Y-3 collection, an nod to the rock and roll lifestyle, is influenced by rock figures as Joplin, Hendrix, Dylan and the Who and puts them them in a modern world. The look is the ideal outfit for an alternative, punk-rock figure. The history of rock & roll, comes back to life with military styled jackets, leather vests, total black and goth themes. The concept of this line is based on escapism in a fantasy rock culture, the rebellious counter-culture that elevates the typical rocker’s life.
Later collections looked to youth culture for direction: graphics Mod checks, punk tartans patterns, and famously used Union Jacks combine with the Yamamoto World. Those eclectic traditional Yamamoto traits like the morning coats and voluminous skirts work as dark English Victoriana seen through the eyes of Japanese avant-garde.
Yamamoto’s Y-3 lines for men and women includes apparel, footwear, watches, bags, and accessories. Each season the collection grows and takes on newer elements which mirror the practical inventiveness of Adidas and the unique style of Yohji Yamamoto.
