He is known for his classic menswear fashion and accessories. He is one of the select few in the fashion world who has had consistently both critical and commercial success. His fashion lines of clothes and accessories for men and women are will recognized by the his multi-stripe signature included on each item.

Smith began his long storied career in fashion in a non-fashionable way. First as an errand boy for a clothing warehouse, then as a display artist. For the same company he was promoted to lead buyer for the menswear collection. It was 1970 when he opened his first small shop. The shop sold hard to find items that Smith came across as a buyer, most of the labels were consider to risky for mainstream stores. Smith worked the shop on the weekend and during the week he worked a variety of jobs from tailor, to display designer to shop clerk. During this time he also attended night school, learning more and more about making clothes. Paul soon began selling his own design in the shop. They were simple, well tailored pieces inspired by the world around him; from his brother’s Post Office shirts and the tweeds of the England county set, to jeans from the US and bespoke suits in unusual blues or greens that he wore himself.

By 1976 Paul had gained a small following for his own design, so he next produced and showed his first menswear collection in Paris, the Paul Smith collection. This lead to more awareness of his fashion and more clients. He soon moved his shop to London and expanded his product lines. He soon added accessories, shoes and a full collection for women. Over the years he has kept the same formula, for his collections and shops, as his wholesale business has grown and he has opened more shops in Asia, the US and Europe while diversifying into everything from house and home products to watches to perfume.

In 2002 Paul Smith collaborated with Cappellini to create the Mondo collection of furniture inspired by observation and travel. In 2003 Paul designed an upholstery textile in partnership with Maharam, called ‘Bespoke’, which was inspired by classic pinstripe suiting.
