The Kors Story

Michael got his start designing clothes while attending Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He gained experience by working at Lothar’s boutique, in New York. He worked for various designers and retailer for several years before launching his own line of clothes. Immediately the collection was recognized as providing a much needed spark to the ready-to-wear industry. His clothes were accessible to the average woman, but also retain it’s fashion feel. The clothes were not groundbreaking, but they were commercial. Kors learned early on to not just anticipate what women want, but to provide fashion that women could connect.

Kors’ body hugging slimmed jumpsuits focused attention to a woman’s body then added a jacket layered to the ensemble. He worked more and more with natural fabrics and earth toned neutral colors. He is considered a minimalist with a twist as he is sometimes generous with hard, curving cuts and shapes. Throughout his collection the separate is essential. Outfits and individual piece can be mixed and matched with much success. This was desirable for women as more and more were entering the work force and wardrobe became more of an issue. During the late 90’s Kors was appointed the first creative director for the House of Celine, a French luxury goods company. Celine was extending the accessories to include full collections. While at Celine Kors is credited with turning the company’s fortunes around with collections which were both critically acclaimed and commercial hits. After several year with Celine Michael turned his attention to his only label. 2002 saw him debut his first full men’s collection, which earned him his second CFCA Award (the first being from his 1999 womenswear collection)
