Hubert studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, and in 1945 started working for fashion designer Jacques Fath. In 1952 he launched his on design house and named his first collection, Bettina Graziani, after Paris’ top model Simone Micheline Bodin. The Byronesque “Bettina” blouse from the collection became a fashion icon in 1945 and led to the bottle/packaging of the top selling perfume, Amarige. Hubert’s style was a dramatic shift from the more conservative fashion designs of the time. Though his clothing used what was considered “cheaper” material, the general public saw this as inventive and imaginative. He had foreseen the fashion climate was undergoing a change, he envisioned a more chicer, relaxed woman stepping into the new century.
The House of Givenchy
In 1953 his clothing was featured on the cover of Life magazine, giving a look to his now growing international name. His clothes were worn by famous women like Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Princess Grace, Jacqueline Kennedy and Greta Garbo. One of his most famous and productive collaboration was with Audrey Hepburn. Their working relationship and friendship lasted well over 40 years. Hepburn, a relatively unknown actress at the time,eventually became the face and ambassador of the label, as well as Hubert’s muse. He created iconic almost historical fashion for all her most well known films; Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sabrina, and Funny Face. As her career rose so did the prominence of the Givenchy brand. Together they defined and introduced a new style of beauty. Perfect lines, narrow hips, swan neck and willowy body frame are elements that made the the new Givenchy woman. Givenchy used Hepburn as the spokesperson for the fragrance L’Iterdit, which was the first time an actress had fronted a perfume brand. This was genius since Hepburn, an American darling, helped secure record sales throughout the world and helped secure Givenchy in US market.
