Fred Perry

Fred Perry logoFred Perry is the first UK fashion brand to blend sportswear with streetwear culture. It’s this commitment and vision that has made it one of the most enduring fashion companies today.

In the end of the 40’s Tennis pro and great Fred Perry was asked by former footballer Tibby Wegner to partner with him on a new concept. Wegner had basically developed the first sweatband and wanted Perry to lend his name to the product. Fred agreed and made his own suggestions to the new item. First the original material was much to heavy so they switch to a soft, flexible lighter material and a business was born. The sweatband was quickly adapted in the tennis circles with other sports areas to join in. With this small success Perry and Wegner, now using the company name, entered the fashion market. Their first icon product was a slim cotton shirt with a laurel wreath logo sewn onto the front. This led to a full blown sportswear collection to be launched.

Fred Perry: The Start

Initially the clothes were worn by selected sports players, but they supplied the shirts to game commentators, as well as using them himself when he participated as sideline game announcer. This was successful since people began associated the shirt, clothes and logos with the premier tennis tournament, Wimbledon. This marketing ploy paid off very nicely for them and and lead to additional collections. Though for years the unique slim fitting light shirt had the most sales and recognition in the market place. The Perry shirt has been connected to several subculture groups over the years. These include the Mods, skinheads, suedeheads, soul boys, rude boys, two tone.

Over time as demand increased the company designed and sold several new lines first shirts (with tipped collars as well as long sleeved) then entire clothing lines. For the brand, this was a transition from sportswear to streetwear, becoming a powerful brand along the way. The company’s clothing connected with the youth culture of England and as British music began to influence and expand to the rest of the world, so did the presence of the Fred Perry look.
