Karen was an assistant designer for Anne Klein, another well known designer and fashion company of the same name. After Klein’s death Donna was named head designer of the entire Klein house of fashion. At 26 she was one of the youngest to head a fashion house or design studio.

The Rise of Donna Karan
After remarrying Karan left Anne Klein and with her husband and partnering with Klein’s former backer, the Takihyo Corporation, formed her own fashion company. The sister company DKNY was formed as a less expensive, youth oriented fashion line, during the late 80’s. Donna was said on several occasions that the line was inspired by her daughter Gabby and aimed at the streetwise culture found in New York City. The line proved a success and grew over the coming 4 years. Next she designed a line of denimwear under the brand of DKNY Jeans. Although there were a flood of designer with denim collection Karan found success by keeping here connection of simple, easy and fun. She has also credited the city of New York for providing a constant ever-changing stream of ideas. 1992 brought the creation of the first line of clothes for men, DKNY for Men. The next years brought amazing growth and demand for the NYC brand.
