The fashion house is best known for their controversial and sometime shocking designs. Before his death McQueen was one of the most respected designer in the world.Alexander began his career interning with tailors Anderson & Sheppard and Gieves & Hawkes. It was on  Savile Row where he became an expert in the detailed tailoring which would become his trademark. He also traveled throughout Italy and Europe gaining more experience from designers like Romeo Gigli and Koji Tatsuno. 1994 he returned to London earned a master degree from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. His first big break came when his designs caught the eye of fashion royalty, stylist Isabella Blow. She ended up purchasing his entire graduating collection.The first runway collection quickly earned him the title of the “the hooligan of English fashion”.

Later in 2004 the company launched their first menswear. After expanding the women’s lines to include travel clothing they unveiled McQ. This line was a significantly lower priced more commercial line which retain Alexander’s l’enfant terrible attitude. These clothes were for both men and women and was designed exclusively by McQueen. The fashion line had a more youthful feel and incorporated denim in very innovative ways.

The McQueen Style
One of the first shows was titled Highland Rape, which reflected McQueen’s Scottish heritage. Caroline Evans, a fashion reporter, said of McQueen “theatrical staging of cruelty.” The brand became known for lavish, unconventional and wild runway shows. For his spring 2003 collection he recreated a disastrous shipwreck; 2005 say models turned into chess piece; and a later show was accused of demeaning women as the models resembled sex blow-up dolls. McQueen’s shows are known for being emotionally charged and raw with energy, yet contemporary. Essential to the McQueen look was the juxtaposition of contrasting elements: fragility and strength, weak and strong, tradition and modernity. Alexander’s collections often combine an incredible working knowledge of British tailoring, fine workmanship of the French Haute Couture and the amazingly detailed finish of Italian manufacturing.As head designer of the McQueen brand Alexander won British Designer of the Year four times, International Designer of the Year by The Council of Fashion Designer’s of America (CFDA) in 2003, A Most Excellent Commander of The British Empire (CBE) by her Majesty the Queen in 2003 and GQ Menswear Designer of the Year in 2007.

Alexander McQueen and the company have collaborated with several prominent designers, fashion houses and companies to expand the product lines as well as introducing new items. The first fragrance was launched in 2003 and was called Kingdom. The second launch was called My Queen. A year later he worked with Safilo and developed a signature line of eyewear. In the spring of 2005 he launched a line of footwear through the company Puma. This line was later expanded to encompass men’s and women’s apparel and accessories. McQ Alexander McQueen for Target was the first collection in which the US retail chain, Target, released which featured well-known fashion designers.
